We’ll start at the beginning by looking into the mythology. There are a number of tales of cats mentioned in Scandinavian folklore.
The Norse godess Freya (Freyja) drove a chariot pulled by two cats.
These are referred to in the Prose Edda as ‘gib-cats’ and are depicted as grey or blue in colour. The cats were a gift from Thor, and she used them to travel to the funeral of Baldur, her estranged son.
Ancient Scandinavian folklore tells stories about mountain-dwelling “fairy cats”, referred to in the tales as “norsk skogkatt”, who were excellent hunters and had extremely good climbing skills. These cats were highly prized among Viking communities, and were eventually domesticated and brought to live on farms. Vikings kept cats as indispensable pets on these farms, and the cats returned the favor by clearing out unwanted pests.
